What Character.AI is

Character.AI is the largest AI character platform on the market, with 10M+ user-made Characters. Users chat and roleplay, generate images inside a conversation with Imagine, build Scenes and Streams, and publish to a community Feed. It now runs a wider library too: series (microdramas), fm (audio drama), reads (serialised fiction) and Comics, which turns a chat into a multi-page comic. Chat runs on proprietary PipSqueak 2, with DeepSqueak and LongSqueak reserved for subscribers.

What it costs

Character.AI has a free plan, while c.ai+ costs $9.99/month or $94.99/year.

Month to month runs $9.99. Paying for a year drops the effective rate to about $7.92 a month ($94.99 billed once), a saving of 21% against the $119.88 reference price. Flash sales have put the first year as low as $59.99, and regional pricing varies widely.

A second layer sits underneath. Charms are an in-app currency earned through daily log-ins and quests, spent on extra image generations, skipping slow mode and ad-skip passes. Comics is Charms-powered. A direct purchase option is promised but no published rate exists yet.

Privacy and data

Privacy is a weaker area because conversations are stored and user content is covered by a broad licence.

• No phone number is required, but age assurance may demand a selfie or ID.
• Conversations are stored on their servers.
• Your content is licensed to the operator on a perpetual, irrevocable basis.

You keep ownership of your Characters and generated output, but grant a worldwide, royalty-free, transferable, sublicensable, perpetual and irrevocable licence to store, modify, commercialise and sublicense that content. The company may access, review, edit or delete your content at any time, and deleting your account does not end those rights. Retention periods are set at the company’s discretion. An arbitration clause and class-action waiver apply, with a 30-day written opt-out, and liability is capped at $100 or what you paid.

Content and safety policy

• Pornographic, obscene and sexually explicit content is banned outright.
• Under-18 users lost open-ended chat entirely in November 2025.
• Age assurance runs on an in-house model plus third-party verification.
• Parental Insights gives guardians a weekly activity summary.
• Self-harm detection reads whole conversations, not single messages, and routes to external crisis partners.

Real-time moderation can also affect conversations that approach restricted sexual or other sensitive content.
